Andrew Cooks was born in Sydney and completed his PhD in 2014.  In 1988 he was Artist in Residence at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest and at Agora am Donaukanal in Vienna, and held an annual studio residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris between 2001 and 2005. In 2010 he was Artist in Residence at the Australian Tapestry Workshop.

 

Cooks has presented more than thirty solo exhibitions since 1985 in Melbourne, Sydney and Budapest including Souvenir 1987-97, the Jewish Museum of Australia 1997 and The Kensington Florilegium, Herring Island 2000. Most recently in June 2014 he showed here and there—a suite of five paintings and miniature Polaroid photographs—at MADA Gallery in Melbourne. He has been included in group exhibitions in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, New York City, Budapest, Krakow, Rome, London, Chandigarh, Vienna and Sapporo since 1978.

 

Awards and prizes include Trustees of the National Gallery of Victoria, Hungarian Ministry of Culture Scholarship, and Australia Council Project Grant.  He is represented in public collections including the National Gallery of Victoria, Jewish Museum of Australia, Victorian College of the Arts, Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts, Australian Embassy Budapest, Arena Collection Vienna, and in private collections.    

 

Cooks lives and works in Smithfield, NY and New York City and teaches at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, the State University of New York and Transart Institute, Berlin and New York City.
